The Best AI Lead Scoring Tools for Small B2B Teams, Scored
We compared the AI lead scorers small B2B teams can actually afford, the ones bundled into a CRM you already pay for and the ones sold as a standalone layer, on what they score, where the feature really lives in the pricing table, and what the real monthly bill looks like.

The Verdict
Freshsales is the pick for most small B2B teams. Freddy AI Contact Scoring is bundled into the Pro plan at $39/user/month with no separate AI add-on, and it does the two things a five-to-thirty person team actually needs: rank inbound leads and flag which open deals are rotting, inside the CRM your reps already live in. Apollo.io is the better answer if outbound is your motion, because AI Lead Scoring is bundled on the Professional tier next to the database and the sequencer. Skip HubSpot's predictive scoring unless you're already on Sales Hub Enterprise, and skip Zoho's Zia unless you're already on Enterprise or Ultimate. Both are excellent, but the price of entry is the whole point of a small-team ranking.
Every small B2B team eventually hits the same wall: more leads than reps, and no honest way to know which ones to call first. AI lead scoring is supposed to fix that. Rank the list, put the hand-raisers at the top, and let a five-person team behave like a fifteen-person one.
The catch is where the feature lives in the pricing table. Almost every CRM you already pay for has an "AI lead scoring" checkbox on its features page. Half the time that checkbox sits behind an Enterprise plan a small team will never buy. We looked at what actually scores leads with machine learning for a small B2B team (not the marketing page), priced each tool at the plan a five-to-thirty person team would realistically land on, and graded them on what a head of sales cares about: whether the score is trustworthy, whether it lives where the rep works, and whether the bill is one you'd approve without a meeting.
How We Tested
5 measured metrics
A documentation, pricing, and feature-page comparison of six AI lead scoring options across five metrics. We priced each product at the plan a five-to-thirty person B2B team would realistically buy, read the maker's own docs for what the AI actually scores and what data it needs, and graded the trade-offs. This is a desk review of current primary sources, not a hands-on test, and every claim below is linked to the maker's page that supports it.
Scoring Quality & Explainability
We read each tool's official docs for what the AI model uses as inputs (engagement, firmographic fit, product usage, historical conversions), whether the score is bounded and updates in real time, and whether the tool exposes the signals that drove a specific score so reps can trust it. Tools that showed the underlying drivers scored higher than opaque black boxes.
Small-Team Plan Fit
We identified the lowest paid plan that actually turns AI lead scoring on for each product, priced it per user per month on annual billing off the vendor's own pricing page, and asked whether a 10-rep B2B team could adopt it without an Enterprise contract. Tools that gated AI scoring behind Enterprise-only tiers lost points here regardless of quality.
Workflow Fit
We read each tool's docs and pricing page for whether the score writes into the same surface the rep already works in (CRM record, prospecting queue, sequence enrollment), whether score thresholds trigger native automations, and how the tool integrates with the rest of a small B2B stack. A score that lives in a side dashboard nobody opens is worth less than a score attached to the record a rep is already looking at.
Data Requirements
We checked each vendor's own documentation for the minimum historical data the model needs before it produces useful scores (converted leads, closed deals, active contacts, trial signups). Tools that require thousands of contacts and hundreds of conversions before the AI turns on are penalized for small-team fit; tools that can score from a lighter history score higher.
Total Cost of Ownership
We modeled the annual bill for a 10-user B2B team on each tool's lowest AI-scoring plan, including the base seat cost and any AI add-on the docs called out (Freddy Copilot/Insights, HubSpot Enterprise onboarding fees, ActiveCampaign CRM add-ons). Tools with hidden add-ons that materially inflate the sticker price lost points here.

Freshsales
Freshworks
The AI lead scorer most small B2B teams should actually buy. The score lives inside the CRM, the AI is bundled into a $39 seat, and it's the shortest path from 'we've a list' to 'we've a ranked list.'
88
Freshsales is Freshworks' sales CRM, and its Freddy AI layer includes Contact Scoring and Deal Insights starting on the Pro plan, which is priced at $39/user/month billed annually. Contact Scoring and Deal Insights are both listed as Pro-tier features on the pricing page, alongside sales sequences, custom sales activities, and territory management. The trade-offs are honest: Freddy scores whatever is in the record, so if reps don't log activities the score degrades; there's no third-party intent data layer telling you which companies are researching your category before they hit your CRM; and Freshworks lists separate add-ons (like the Freddy AI Agent at $49 per 100 sessions) on top of the Pro seat price.
Contact Scoring and Deal Insights are both bundled into the Pro plan at $39/user/month billed annually
Sits inside the CRM, phone, and email tools reps already use, so the score is on the record, not in a side dashboard
The lower Growth tier at $9/user/month gives a small team a real place to start before the AI upgrade
Cons
Freddy scores only what's in the CRM, so bad logging hygiene will quietly wreck the score
No native buyer-intent layer showing which companies are researching your category before they hit the CRM
Freddy AI Agent sessions are a separate add-on line item at $49 per 100 sessions on top of Pro

Apollo.io
Apollo
The right pick if outbound is your motion. AI Lead Scoring lives next to the database and the sequencer, not off in a marketing tool your SDR never opens.
85
Apollo is a B2B sales intelligence platform that bundles a large contact database, a sales engagement layer, and an AI feature set into a per-seat product. Scoring is available inside the same surface reps use to search accounts, reveal contacts, and enroll them into sequences, so you can combine demographic and behavioral signals against Apollo's database to pinpoint the most promising leads. It's the strongest fit when your bottleneck is 'we need to prioritize an outbound list,' not 'we need to rank the inbound queue.' The catches are real: Apollo runs on a credit meter that can inflate the effective bill, and independent testing has flagged data-accuracy gaps that make verification a good idea before you fire a sequence.
The score lives in the same product as the database, the dialer, and the sequencer, so nothing needs to be re-synced
A free-forever Starter plan and paid plans on top of it make Apollo a low-risk starting point for a small outbound team
Cons
Credit-based pricing on top of seats means the sticker price isn't the real bill
Data accuracy is competitive rather than best-in-class, so a verification step is worth building into your workflow

ActiveCampaign
ActiveCampaign
The pick if your sales motion is really an email motion. Contact scoring is the cleanest way to rank a marketing list without buying a second tool.
79
ActiveCampaign is marketing automation with a built-in Sales CRM, and its lead scoring feature assigns a real-time score to each contact based on behavior and attributes, then lets you trigger automations off score thresholds, automatically create a deal in the CRM when a lead hits a number, or move a cold prospect back into nurture. You can build points-based rules, behavioral scoring rules, product-specific scores, and category-specific scores, and route high-scoring leads automatically to the right rep. It's the right tool when the front end of your funnel is email (lead magnets, newsletter, product marketing) and your "lead scoring" job is really "which of my 8,000 subscribers is warm enough for a sales conversation." The trade-off is that predictive lead scoring (AI/ML-driven) is a separate capability under ActiveCampaign's Active Intelligence layer, and the built-in Sales CRM is real but light next to a dedicated sales tool.
Real-time scoring across points-based, behavioral, product-specific, and category-specific rules in one platform
Score thresholds can natively create a deal in the CRM and trigger personalized follow-up journeys
Predictive scoring and AI-driven optimization sit under the Active Intelligence layer on top of manual scoring rules
Multiple score models per account let you score contacts differently for different product lines
Cons
True predictive AI scoring lives under Active Intelligence, not the base scoring feature
The score is engagement-heavy by default and doesn't include third-party buyer-intent signals
ActiveCampaign plans scale with contact count, so a 10,000-contact list is materially more expensive than a small one

Zoho CRM (Zia)
Zoho
The value pick if you're already on Zoho. Zia AI lead scoring is genuinely capable and doesn't carry a separate AI surcharge, but the plan you have to be on is the entire question.
77
Zia is Zoho's built-in AI layer, and in Zoho CRM specifically it covers predictive lead and deal scoring (Zia scores), churn prediction, custom field prediction, AI forecasting, anomaly detection, best-time and best-mode to contact recommendations, similarity recommendations, data enrichment from public sources and email signatures, and voice-of-the- customer analytics. Zia scores identify the prospects most likely to convert so reps can prioritize them, and field prediction lets you build custom models for outcomes like the likelihood of winning or losing a deal or the expected revenue from it. You don't pay a separate AI surcharge, but Zia's fuller feature set lives higher up Zoho CRM's plan ladder. If you're already a Zoho shop, this is one of the best-value AI scorers in the field. If you're not, it's a full CRM migration to get to the score.
Zia scores, churn prediction, field prediction, and anomaly detection are all part of the built-in AI layer with no separate AI add-on
Field prediction lets you build custom models for deal win/loss, expected revenue, and other record-level outcomes
The wider Zoho suite bundles Zia across support, analytics, and finance for teams that want one vendor
Cons
The deeper Zia capabilities sit on Zoho CRM's higher tiers, so smaller Standard and Professional customers can't turn everything on
Predictive models need meaningful historical data before they produce trustworthy scores
If you're not already on Zoho, getting to this AI layer is a CRM migration, not a feature toggle

HubSpot Sales Hub
HubSpot
The safe, well-built CRM answer, but the real AI-driven scoring is gated behind Enterprise, and that's a heavy price for a small team.
74
HubSpot's lead scoring tool lets you build engagement scores, fit scores, and combined engagement-and-fit scores across contacts, companies, and deals, with score groups, score decay, thresholds, and inclusion/exclusion lists. The AI-based scoring layer, which trains a model on your converted and non-converted contacts and generates score criteria automatically, is documented as a Marketing Hub Enterprise feature and requires a minimum sample of 50 contacts (25 converted and 25 non-converted) to generate a score. Sales Hub carries combined engagement-and-fit scoring on deals, but the AI score creation itself is Marketing Hub Enterprise. For teams already up-tier on HubSpot, this is a mature, well-integrated feature; for a five-to-thirty person B2B team looking at HubSpot for the first time, the price of entry is why this ranks where it does. The lower plans still give you engagement and fit scoring across contacts, companies, and deals, but the AI layer is above most small-team budgets.
Deep native integration with the HubSpot Marketing Hub funnel, forms, workflows, and CRM records
Engagement, fit, and combined scores are available on Professional and Enterprise tiers of Marketing Hub and Sales Hub
AI score creation needs a minimum of 50 contacts (25 converted and 25 non-converted), which is a lower cold-start bar than some enterprise tools
Score thresholds tie into HubSpot's mature workflow builder for routing, notifications, and follow-up
Cons
AI-driven contact scoring is gated to Marketing Hub Enterprise, not the small-team tiers
Sales Hub Enterprise pricing puts the deepest scoring capabilities well above small-team budgets
For a five-person B2B team, the total bill is well above what a Freshsales or Apollo setup costs

Pipedrive
Pipedrive
Fine pipeline CRM, thinner AI scoring. Custom lead and deal scoring lives on the Premium plan, and the AI layer is more "assistant" than "predictive model."
71
Pipedrive is a sales-focused, per-seat CRM that restructured into four tiers (Lite, Growth, Premium, and Ultimate) in 2025. Its AI layer, the Sales Assistant, analyzes deals, contacts, and emails to surface win probability predictions, flag stalled deals, recommend next actions, and summarize long email threads. Custom lead and deal scoring is a Premium-plan feature at $49/user/month, alongside LeadBooster lead generation, Smart Docs, and AI-powered email tools. Where Pipedrive earns its rank is small-team fit: the pipeline UI is famously easy to adopt, the entry price of $14/user/month is genuinely low, and the AI Sales Assistant is useful without any setup. Where it slips is the depth of the scoring itself; Pipedrive's lead scoring is closer to activity-based ranking than a trained predictive model, and small teams under a few hundred active leads may not need it at all.
Custom lead and deal scoring on Premium bundles LeadBooster, Smart Docs, and Projects at no extra add-on charge
The AI Sales Assistant surfaces win probability, stalled deals, and next-best-actions on every tier from Lite up
$14/user/month entry price on Lite makes Pipedrive one of the lowest-risk starting points in the category
Pipeline UI is the easiest to adopt in the field, which matters more than model depth for a small team
Cons
Lead scoring is a Premium-tier feature, so the entry price and the scoring price are two different numbers
The AI layer is closer to "assistant" than a trained predictive model. Useful, but not the depth of Zia or HubSpot's predictive score
Add-ons like LeadBooster and Campaigns can push the real bill well above the sticker for teams that need them

Best for Small B2B teams that want the easiest pipeline UI in the field and don't need a heavyweight predictive scoring layer to run their day.
A note on how we ranked this, because the answer surprised us less than the reasoning did.
We went in expecting HubSpot to win. It’s the CRM most small B2B teams end up on, its predictive lead scoring is genuinely well-built, and the workflow tools around it are the best in the field. But once we priced it at the plan a small team would actually buy (not the marketing page) the story changed. AI-driven contact scoring is a Marketing Hub Enterprise feature, and for a five-to-thirty person team that’s a heavy price to pay for one number.
Freshsales wins because it makes the trade a small team actually wants. Pro is $39 a seat, Freddy AI Contact Scoring and Deal Insights are bundled, and the score lives on the record the rep is already looking at. It’s not the deepest predictive model in the field (Zia’s is arguably better, and HubSpot’s is more mature) but it’s the one that gets you from “we have a list” to “we have a ranked list” without a plan-tier upgrade nobody signed off on. Use the tool your team actually opens, not the one that scores best in a spec sheet.
Apollo is the honest answer for outbound teams. If your day starts in a prospecting queue and ends in a sequence, the score belongs next to those two things, not off in a marketing automation tool. Just budget for the credit meter. We’ve written about that in our Apollo.io review, and it’s the single most-common reason the sticker price and the real bill don’t match.
ActiveCampaign is a fine third if your funnel is genuinely email-led, and Zia is a bargain if you’re already on Zoho. Pipedrive we’d pick for the pipeline UI first and treat the AI Sales Assistant as a bonus, not the reason to buy.
One more thing worth saying, because it kept coming up as we read the docs: none of these scores are a substitute for a follow-up motion. A 92 that never gets a second touch is worth exactly the same as a 43 that never gets one. If you’re picking a scoring tool, the next thing to fix is the sequence that fires when the score crosses your threshold. That’s what turns a ranked list into a booked meeting. Our ranking of AI sales follow-up and sequence tools for small B2B teams is where we’d go next, and it pairs cleanly with any pick above.
What's the best AI lead scoring tool for a small B2B team overall?
Freshsales. Freddy AI Contact Scoring is bundled into the Pro plan at $39/user/month, it scores leads on engagement and firmographic fit inside the CRM your reps already use, and it exposes the signals behind the score so reps can trust the number. Apollo.io (85) is the runner-up and the better pick if outbound is your motion.
What if we run mostly outbound and live in a prospecting tool, not a CRM?
Apollo.io. Scoring lives in the same surface reps use to search the contact database, reveal contacts, and enroll them into sequences. That means the score is on the same surface an SDR is already working in, which is worth more for outbound teams than a slightly deeper predictive model that lives somewhere else.
Do we need HubSpot Sales Hub Enterprise for AI lead scoring?
Only if you want the AI-generated scoring model. HubSpot's engagement, fit, and combined scores are available on Professional and Enterprise tiers of Marketing Hub and Sales Hub, but AI score creation for contacts specifically requires Marketing Hub Enterprise, with a minimum sample of 50 contacts (25 converted and 25 non-converted) to generate a score. For most small B2B teams, that Enterprise tier is above budget.
How much historical data do we actually need before the AI is useful?
It varies a lot by tool. HubSpot's AI score creation needs a minimum sample of 50 contacts (25 converted, 25 non-converted). Zoho's Zia needs meaningful historical CRM data (converted and non-converted examples) before its predictive models produce trustworthy scores. Freshsales and Apollo work with lighter histories because they mix admin-configured rules with a machine-learning layer, which is why they rank higher for small-team fit.
Is AI lead scoring worth it if we've fewer than 200 active leads?
Honestly, not always. Below a few hundred active leads, manual prioritization based on ICP fit and observed intent (pricing-page visits, replies, referrals) is often as effective as a trained model, and every model in this ranking degrades if your CRM logging is patchy. If a rep can eyeball the list every morning and reliably pick the top five, buy the scoring tool for the workflow benefits (automated routing, threshold-triggered follow-ups), not the number itself.
